System operator Elia decided to have an artificial energy island built in the Belgian North Sea. It transports renewable energy from offshore wind farms to the high-voltage onshore grid and connects the Belgian grid to the British and Danish grids, among others. This world first is right in the middle of one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. And Jan De Nul is co-building as a partner in TM EDISON.

Mangroves are disappearing at a fast pace due to intensive aquaculture activities, wood harvesting, and urban development. The goal of the AquaForest project is to create a blueprint for mangrove restoration, that can be implemented in other countries and regions on a large scale. The 50-hectare island we created in Ecuador is the first example.

Mangrove deliver important eco-system services: they are carbon sinks, serve as water filters, are hotspots for biodiversity, protect coasts from erosion and support socio-economic activitites.
The island is built using dredged material from a local access channel, making this type of nature-based solutions economically feasible.
We established a local management system for the mangrove island, building upon its ecological and socio-economic value. Local stakeholders and communities were involved in every step of the project and act as custodians.

Bangladesh has some remote areas where there is less opportunity to use any road for any kind of construction work. For construction purposes, construction equipment can’t be carried by road. So there is only one opportunity to reach there and doing any construction work by waterways. So that those areas need a permanent jetty for doing those works. Using of jetty construction is increasing day by day in Dhaka including allover in Bangladesh. We served any types of jetty construction in Dhaka also in whole Bangladesh. The first step in the construction of the mangrove island was to establish conditions that are ideal for the growth of mangrove. To achieve this, we conducted an extensive feasibility study and applied targeted eco-engineering. We investigated the interaction with waves and currents, how water flows through and drains from the soil, the type of soil in which mangrove trees thrive, the interaction with other plants and species… And we looked at the type of protection juvenile mangrove trees need during the first months of their development.

AquaForest is an international project consortium coordinated by Jan De Nul. Partners include: South Pole, Mantis Consulting, Haedes, University ESPOL in Ecuador, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and the NGO Fundación Calisur. We also involve local authorities, government, researchers, and local communities. The project is subsidised the Flemish government via the Flanders International Climate Action Programme and by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
